To minimize your electric costs, you must first understand your rate schedule and why your utility charges you the way it does. Energymanager.com uses your utility’s published rate schedule to find clues to the steps you can take to reduce your electric bill.

1 Your electric utility has assigned an account number for each individual electric contract you have with them. An account typically has one electric meter associated with it, but there can be multiple meters. Energymanager.com maintains a history for each electric account for which you purchase a subscription.
2 A rate schedule is a series of calculations to determine the monthly electric bill. Utilities have different rate schedules for different customer types. For example, there are rate schedules that are only available to residential customers. Other rate schedules might have requirements related to the amount of electricity used, or the type of operation. Your rate schedule is usually shown on the first page of your electric bill.
